Referrals
The first step in referring a young person to MAP is often a phone call to the relevant Development Worker. This is a chance to speak, informally, about MAP's suitability and the kind of issues that the young person is facing. MAP will need to gather some basic information about the young person and reasons behind the referral.
Then, a visit to MAP gives the young person a chance to meet staff and other students and see the facilities. They can find out more about the project and MAP staff can find out more about their interests.
Young people interested in trying MAP can do a taster day, giving them a chance to get a feel for the environment and the nature of the work. There will be no obligations and MAP is happy to be patient while young people consider their options.
MAP works best in partnership with other workers and agencies who can support the students and encourage their commitment. In the past, young people have been referred from a range of agencies, including Connexions, local colleges and training facilities, mental health centres, and housing agencies.
Where appropriate, MAP aims to form a three-way partnership with students and at least one other support worker, often a Connexions PA. Regular, informal meetings to assess progress and identify any difficulties can really help students get the most from their time on the programme. MAP can also get involved in helping the student think about their progression after the project.
